Some of the best makeup artists and hairstylists were honored at the 10th anniversary of the Hollywood Beauty Awards, including the rockstar of SFX Makeup: Mike Marino.
Stephen Dorff, who worked with Marino on “True Detective” and witnessed his talents in aging makeup, presented Outstanding Achievement in SFX Makeup at the 10th ceremony.
Rick Baker, Joel Harlow and Michael Westmore are among the past HBA SFX Makeup honorees. Three makeup artists who specialize in red carpet and editorial looks competed in a category named after Mike: The MM Makeup Award. The nominees were Kristofer Buckle, who was supported by Mariah Carey in attendance, Carola Gonzalez known for Sabrina Carpenter‘s makeup and the winner, Michael Anthony who works regularly with Ariana Grande.
A master of cinematic transformation, Mike Marino is a three-time Academy Award nominated makeup-artist. His extraordinary ability to bring characters to life through prosthetics and special effects has earned him recognition for his groundbreaking work in A Different Man (2025), The Batman (2023), and Coming 2 America (2022). Marino’s artistry turned Colin Farrell into the iconic Penguin in The Penguin, gave Eddie Murphy the ability to portray multiple characters with remarkable authenticity, and created a stunning, transformative look for Sebastian Stan in A Different Man.
At a young age, Marino became a protégé of legendary makeup artist Dick Smith. Now, with over 30 years of experience in the film industry, he has collaborated with Hollywood’s top filmmakers and stars, including Martin Scorsese, Darren Aronofsky, Will Smith, Eddie Murphy, Nicole Kidman, and John Travolta.
Marino’s work on The Irishman (2019) showcased his expertise in de-aging technology and his transformative makeup also played a key role in Black Swan (2010), where he crafted the stunning physical metamorphosis of Natalie Portman’s character. His work on True Detective (2014) and The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) earned praise for their meticulous attention to detail in both character creation and realism.
As the founder of Prosthetic Renaissance, Marino has set a new standard in special effects makeup, earning widespread acclaim and industry accolades for his unparalleled artistry.
The stars came out to celebrate and support fellow honorees and nominees. From Mariah Carey for makeup nominee Kristofer Buckle to Colman Domingo for longtime friend and Groomer of the Year winner Jamie Richmond, as well as Sydney Sweeney who accompanied Glen Coco Oropeza (The SS Hairstyling Award winner) and more.
Academy Award winning actress Regina King presented the first honoree award, Outstanding Achievement in Makeup to longtime friend Debi Young. Together, they worked on Shirley, Watchmen and more.
3x Oscar® nominee and Golden Globe winner Dyan Cannon received The Timeless Beauty Award, which was presented by Michael Nouri, who shared that he was lucky enough to kiss the star Laker’s girl.
4x Grammy winner Otis Williams of The Temptations received a standing ovation receiving The Gentleman’s Award from the legendary Smokey Robinson. In 2018, Smokey received the very first Gentleman’s Award at the HBAs from Lionel Richie.
Golden Globe winner and Shōgun star Hiroyuki Sanada celebrated International Hairstyling Award honoree Mitsuyo Takasaki, who traveled from Japan to receive her award. Hiroyuki and Mitsuyo had worked on several films together over the decades before Shōgun. Mitsuyo helped to bring the hairstyling designs of the hit FX series to life under the direction of Sanna Seppanen, who received Outstanding Achievement in Hairstyling from actress Caitlin O’Connor. Caitlin worked with Sanna when she portrayed Dyan Cannon on HBO’s Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty.
Celebrated actor John Ortiz presented Outstanding Achievement in Costume Design to Janty Yates, who worked with John on American Gangster, as well as over 18 films with Sir Ridley Scott.
Brian Badie, who worked with Mike Marino on HBO’s The Penguin, was honored with Outstanding Achievement in Hairstyling. Presented by actor Jussie Smollett, Brian first worked with Jussie and his sister Jurnee Smollett on Eve’s Bayou.
Hit recording artist and Latin Grammy nominee Becky G paid tribute to Avery Colvert for founding Altadena Girls in the midst of the LA wildfires. Avery received The Beauty Impact Award.
Academy award nominated actress Shohreh Aghdashloo presented Fragrance of the Year to Clive Christian. Nichebox’s Co-founder & CEO Dino Pace and Co-founder & Marketing Director Yulia Coulon traveled from Italy and the UK to receive.
Academy Award nominated costume designer Arianne Phillips (A Complete Unknown) presented Outstanding Achievement in Photography to longtime friend Davis Factor. A beauty industry icon, Davis co-founded Smashbox Studios.
IT Cosmetics founder and guest Shark on SHARK TANK, Jamie Kern Lima presented Brand of the Year to industry pioneer Victoria Jackson for NO MAKEUP MAKEUP®.
Marjan Tabibzada, also known as @YoungCouture_ to her millions of followers, presented The International Beauty Award to Parfums de Marly for Delina. Yvan Jacqueline, the President of Americas for Parfums de Marly accepted the honor.
WEN founder Chaz Dean joined Emmy winning host and fashion designer Lawrence Zarian on stage with 11-week-old Jack Russell Terrier/Spaniel blend orphan pups Rita HayWOOF and ChristoFUR Walkin’ from Helen Woodward Animal Center to announce The Janty Yates Styling Award. Jared Ellner won the category who was accompanied on stage by friend Emma Chamberlain. Ryan Destiny supported Debi Young Makeup Award winner Ernesto Casillas on stage as well. The theme of the evening continued with Devante Turnbull bringing his twin brother on stage for his Hairstyling win and Colman Domingo joined Jamie Richmond for Groomer of the Year.
Past winners and nominees returned to open winning envelopes, including makeup artist D’Andre Michael with actress Garcelle Beauvais, HBA Makeup winners Angela Levin & Anthony Nguyen, HBA hairstyling winners Jenny Cho with Clayton Hawkins, Comedian Aida Rodriguez with HBA Hairstyling winner & Brand of the Year honoree Larry Sims, HBA Photo nominee Frazer Harrison and more.
Oscar® nominated makeup artist Donald Mowat served as the 2025 HBA Ambassador.
