Pope Francis Dies At Age 88 Just After Easter Sunday

Pope Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Catholic Church and a global symbol of humility and compassion, has died at the age of 88. His passing was announced by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Vatican camerlengo.

Cardinal Kevin Farrell released the following statement from the chapel of the Domus Santa Marta, where Pope Francis lived:

“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow, I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, The Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the Father’s house. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His church.

“He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with faithfulness, courage, and universal love, especially for the poorest and most marginalized. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of God, One and Triune.’’

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, Pope Francis made history in 2013 when he became the 266th pope—and the first from the Americas. Throughout his papacy, he was widely recognized for shifting the Church’s tone toward inclusion, advocating for the poor, and prioritizing mercy over judgment. His approachable style and commitment to social justice resonated across religious and cultural lines, marking a transformative era in the Vatican’s modern history.

Further details about funeral arrangements and succession are expected in the coming days.
