Rick Baker, Joel Harlow and Michael Westmore are among the past HBA SFX Makeup honorees.
A master of cinematic transformation, Mike Marino is a three-time Academy Award nominated makeup-artist. His extraordinary ability to bring characters to life through prosthetics and special effects has earned him recognition for his groundbreaking work in A Different Man (2025), The Batman (2023), and Coming 2 America (2022). Marino’s artistry turned Colin Farrell into the iconic Penguin in The Penguin, gave Eddie Murphy the ability to portray multiple characters with remarkable authenticity, and created a stunning, transformative look for Sebastian Stan in A Different Man.
At a young age, Marino became a protégé of legendary makeup artist Dick Smith. Now, with over 30 years of experience in the film industry, he has collaborated with Hollywood’s top filmmakers and stars, including Martin Scorsese, Darren Aronofsky, Will Smith, Eddie Murphy, Nicole Kidman, and John Travolta.
Marino’s work on The Irishman (2019) showcased his expertise in de-aging technology and his transformative makeup also played a key role in Black Swan (2010), where he crafted the stunning physical metamorphosis of Natalie Portman’s character. His work on True Detective (2014) and The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) earned praise for their meticulous attention to detail in both character creation and realism.
As the founder of Prosthetic Renaissance, Marino has set a new standard in special effects makeup, earning widespread acclaim and industry accolades for his unparalleled artistry.
Marino will accept Outstanding Achievement in SFX Makeup at the black-tie ceremony on Sunday, April 6, 2025 benefitting Helen Woodward Animal Center.
