Wildfires Spread In California: These Are Top Fire Safety Tips

Devastating fires have hit Ventura County, from Malibu to Moorpark. Gusty winds continue to spread fires, which are destroying homes and forcing California residents to evacuate.

In Los Angeles County, wildfires will always be a natural part of the beautiful state we have chosen to call home. Wildfires will continue to be fueled by a build-up of dry vegetation and driven by hot, dry “Santa Ana” winds, making them extremely dangerous and challenging for firefighters to control.

It’s important to know the: Ready! Set! Go! procedure.

READY

Create and maintain defensible space and harden your home against flying embers.

SET

Prepare your family and home ahead of time for the possibility of having to evacuate.

GO

Take the evacuation steps necessary to give your family and home the best chance of surviving a wildfire.

Creating and maintaining defensible space is essential for increasing your home’s chance of surviving a wildfire. It is the buffer homeowners are required to create between their structure and the landscape. This space slows the spread of wildfire and improves the safety of firefighters defending your home. Defensible space composition varies, depending on vegetation type and topography. Three zones make up the required 200 feet of defensible space.
