Ever since Netflix announced that they will be cracking down on sharing account passwords, “Cancel Netflix account” has hit the top of the Google search engines.
In a statement to Netflix users, the streaming platform said: A Netflix account is for use by one household. Everyone living in that household can use Netflix wherever they are — at home, on the go, on holiday — and take advantage of new features like Transfer Profile and Manage Access and Devices. We recognize that our members have many entertainment choices. It’s why we continue to invest heavily in a wide variety of new films and TV shows — so whatever your taste, mood or language and whoever you’re watching with, there’s always something satisfying to watch on Netflix.
How will they know if you’re sharing or not? Netflix uses IP addresses, device IDs and account activity from devices signed into an account to determine who shares a household.
Analysis of Google search data reveals that online searches for ‘Cancel Netflix account’ soared 706% in the United States on May 24, as the streaming giant rolls out its plan to crack down on password sharing, according to KingCasinoBonus.
At the same time, searches for ‘Netflix password sharing’ soared by 1,708% as US-based account holders find out how they will be affected.
It has also begun notifying users of an $8 monthly charge to share their account with someone outside their household, in an effort to boost its subscribers.
But Netflix’s plans to restrict account and password sharing have prompted a rise in interest in canceling US accounts.
