Tokyo Olympics: USA Gymnastics Takes Home Silver, Simone Biles Withdraws

The U.S. women's artistic gymnastics team – comprised of Simone Biles of Spring, Texas, Jordan Chiles of Vancouver, Wash., Sunisa Lee of St. Paul, Minn., and Grace McCallum of Isanti, Minn. advanced to the Tokyo Olympic team competition final and took home the Silver Medal behind Russia.

Star teammember, Simone Biles withdrew from the night’s competition on July 27th as the U.S.’s gold-medal-level domination in the event came to a close. Biles previously medaled five times in the 2016 Summer Games in Rio. She had planned to do a Yurchenko vault with two and a half twists, but only completed one and a half, landing with a large step.

In a statement, USA Gymnastics cited medical reasons for her decision. “Simone Biles has withdrawn from the team final competition due to a medical issue,” the statement read. “She will be assessed daily to determine medical clearance for future competitions.”

The U.S. team (170.562) qualified in second place behind the Russian Olympic Committee (171.629).

Biles and Lee finished first and third in all-around qualifying, respectively. Biles' 57.731 led the field, while Brazil's Rebeca Andrade (57.399) edged Lee (57.166) for the second spot.
