California Residents Plan To Strike To Cancel Rent Payments

Thousands of people across California hit hard by the COVID-19 economic crisis will appear together at a virtual town hall meeting on Monday, April 27, at 12:30pm PST to demand that Governor Gavin Newsom order an immediate cancellation of rent and mortgage payments for the duration of the pandemic. If their demands aren't met, several thousand people plan to begin a rent strike on May 1st.

No one should have to choose between paying for food or housing. All of us deserve to have shelter from the storm, a permanent home, and food and medicine to keep us nourished and healthy. Now more than ever, our collective well-being depends on it.

The townhall is being organized by Tenants Together, Housing Now!, Homes for All California, ACCE Action, Housing Is A Human Right, PICO CA & Partnership for Working Families. Several supportive local and state level elected officials plan to attend.

Five Californians who are having to choose between food or rent and are afraid of losing their homes will be speaking to share their stories.

When: Monday, April 27, 12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. PST
