The 70th Annual Tony Awards couldn't have asked for a better emcee; the lovable and hilarious, James Corden. The endearing host of "The Late Late Show," lit up the stage on Sunday night at the Beacon Theatre in New York City for the biggest night in theater. As Corden so perfectly put it: "[The Tony Awards] is like the Superbowl for people who have no idea what the Superbowl is."
In tasteful fashion, Corden opened the show speaking to TV audiences around the nation, sending support and well wishes to those affected by the horrific Orlando shootings.Moving into the opening number, the cast of 'Hamilton' re-introduced Corden to the stage for a classic Broadway medley which narrated the host's love for the theater. Writers brilliantly blended known melodies from "Evita" to "Cats," "Dreamgirls," "A Chorus Line" and more.
Throughout the evening, audiences were taken from the stage to outside the theater where Sara Bareilles, Steve Martin, the cast of "School of Rock" and more performed uplifting interludes. Inside, the sequins were shining and the costume feathers flying with performances from shows and nominees, such as Brandon Victor Dixon and Adrienne Warren and the cast of "Shuffle Along;" Laura Benanti, Zachary Levi and Jane Krakowski and the cast of SHE LOVES ME; Alex Brightman and the cast of "School of Rock;" Danny Burstein and the cast of "Fiddler On The Roof;" Danielle Brooks and Cynthia Erivo and the cast of "The Color Purple;" Lin-Manuel Miranda, Phillipa Soo, Leslie Odom Jr., Renee Elise Goldsberry, Christopher Jackson and Daveed Diggs and the cast of HAMILTON; Bareilles, Christopher Fitzgerald and Jessie Mueller and the cast of "Waitress;" Carmen Cusack and the cast of "Bright Star;" and the cast of "Spring Awakening"… and last, but not least: audiences were treated with a performance by Gloria Estefan and the cast of "On Your Feet."
Stars from film to TV and the stage presented, including Uzo Aduba, Claire Danes, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Jake Gyllenhaal, Neil Patrick Harris, Sean Hayes and more.
Naturally, the big star of the evening was the hit musical, "Hamilton," with its record-breaking 16 nominations.
