2016 NFL Draft: Let’s Break It Down

The Los Angeles Rams selected QB (Quarterback) JARED GOFF with the No. 1 overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft, marking the first time since 1975 (STEVE BARTKOWSKI) that a quarterback from the University of California was chosen first overall.

Goff joins Bartkowski, CRAIG MORTON (1965), RICH CAMPBELL (1981), KYLE BOLLER (2003) and AARON RODGERS (2005) as the only Cal quarterbacks to be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft.

SMALL SCHOOL SUCCESS: North Dakota State QB CARSON WENTZ was selected by Philadelphia with the second overall selection in the 2016 NFL Draft, becoming the fifth quarterback from a non-FBS school to be drafted in the first round since 1979, when Division I-A was formed.

TOP TWO QBs: California QB JARED GOFF (No. 1; Los Angeles Rams) and North Dakota State QB CARSON WENTZ (No. 2; Philadelphia Eagles) heard their names called with the first two picks of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Since the beginning of the common draft in 1967, quarterbacks have been taken with the first two picks of the same draft seven times. Last year, JAMEIS WINSTON and MARCUS MARIOTA were selected with the top two picks. It marks the second time that quarterbacks have been selected with the top two picks in consecutive drafts (1998 and 1999).

BUCKEYE BRILLIANCE: Five Ohio State players heard their names called in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft – DE JOEY BOSA (3rd overall; San Diego Chargers), RB EZEKIEL ELLIOTT (4th overall; Dallas Cowboys), CB ELI APPLE (10th overall; New York Giants), T TAYLOR DECKER (16th overall; Detroit Lions) and LB DARRON LEE (20th overall; New York Jets).

With five Buckeyes chosen, it ties Southern California (1968), Miami (2002) and Ohio State (2006) for the second-most first-round picks since 1967. Miami (2004) is the only school with six first- round selections in one draft.

THE SCHOOLS WITH THE MOST FIRST-ROUND PICKS IN ONE DRAFT (SINCE 1967)

FIRST ROUND REBELS: Mississippi T LAREMY TUNSIL (No. 13; Miami Dolphins), WR LAQUON TREADWELL (No. 23; Minnesota Vikings) and DT ROBERT NKEMDICHE (No. 29; Arizona Cardinals) all heard their names called in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft. It marks the first time in school history that three players were selected in the first round.

The last time Ole Miss had multiple players selected in the first round was 2009, when T MICHAEL OHER (23rd overall, Baltimore) and DT PERIA JERRY (24th overall, Atlanta) were both chosen.

ROLL TIDE: Alabama C RYAN KELLY was selected No. 18 overall by Indianapolis. Alabama now has a current streak of eight consecutive drafts with at least one first-round pick. The Crimson Tide surpassed Pittsburgh (1983-1989), Ohio State (1991-1997) and Florida (1997-2003) for the third- longest consecutive streak with at least one player drafted in the first round since the advent of the common draft in 1967.

IRISH WIDE RECEIVERS: Notre Dame WR WILL FULLER (No. 21; Houston Texans) became the fourth wide receiver in school history to be drafted in the first round since 1967.

Fuller joined Pro Football Hall of Famer TIM BROWN (1988), MICHAEL FLOYD (2012) and JIM SEYMOUR (1969) as the only Notre Dame wide receivers selected in the first round.

HISTORIC HORNED FROG: Texas Christian WR JOSH DOCTSON (No. 22; Washington Redskins) became the first wide receiver in school history to be drafted in the first round since the beginning of the common draft in 1967.

TERRIFIC TECH: Carolina selected Louisiana Tech DT VERNON BUTLER with the 30th overall selection in the 2016 NFL Draft. Butler is the first defensive player in school history to be drafted in the first round.
