“When A Man Loves A Woman” R&B Singer Percy Sledge Dies Of Liver Cancer At Age 74

Known for the legendary hit, “When A Man Loves A Woman,” R&B singer Percy Sledge has passed away at the age of 74.

According to reports, Sledge died of liver cancer in Baton Rouge. Sledge was a hospital nurse in the early 60s, before meeting record producer Quin Ivy through a patient, who was a mutual friend. 

“When A Man Loves A Woman” was the first gold record ever earned by Atlantic Records and ushered in the era of Ahmet Ertegun, Jerry Wexler, Aretha Franklin, Sam & Dave, Wilson Pickett and many more. The song also hit #1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 chart and R&B chart in 1966.

The soul anthem became the cornerstone of the singer’s career. More hits followed with: “Warm and Tender Love,” “It Tears Me Up”, “Take Time to Know Her,” “Love Me Tender”, and “Cover Me”.

Sledge also charted with “I’ll Be Your Everything” and “Ain’t No Sunshine” during the 1970s. Sledge was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame in 2005.
