Sochi Olympics: The Final Games & Closing Ceremonies

With the time zone difference, Russia has already seen the Closing Ceremonies of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. The US will have to wait until Sunday night to see the festivities. As for who topped the medal count: Russia won 13 gold medals; two more than runner-up Norway. Overall, Russian athletes won 33 medals, five more than the United States’ 28. This is the first time the host nation swept both medal counts since Norway did it at the 1952 Winter Games in Oslo.

The closing ceremony, which begins at 8:30PM ET/PT on NBC, was directed by Daniele Finzi Pasca, who has enjoyed worldwide success with productions such as ‘Corteo’ for Cirque du Soleil and ‘Requiem by Verdi’ for the Mariinsky Theatre.

The Italian director and screenwriter was chosen in order to show how Russian culture is seen in a global context.

Creative director Konstantin Ernst said, “We wanted to take a new fresh look at the Russian culture.” He added, “We wanted to change our perspective and to look at Russian culture through the eyes of a European, and for that reason we invited one of the most talented European directors, my friend Daniele Finzi Pasca.”
