Who Took Home An American Music Award?

American Music Awards

Always known for their great set production and performances, this year’s American Music Awards was a bit of a miss with sound issues, out of place presenters and a lack of flow throughout the night. The dick clark and ABC production was off to a rocky technical start opening with a colorful Japanese themed performance by Katy Perry with her current hit, “Unconditional.” Although the mic level was faint, Perry delivered with cirque du soleil type dancers spinning from ceiling chords and an ensemble dressed in kimonos. Host, Pitbull brought the Latin flavor with his lively personality and occasional Spanish line but he seemed to disappear half-way through the night.

The show continued with highlights from Favorite Pop/Rock Album winners — One Direction who had trouble hitting the high notes, New Artist of the Year — Ariana Grande, Country superstars — Florida Georgia Line, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera and many more. Rihanna was presented with the Icon Award from her mother and Jay-Z via video speech. One of the best features of the evening was Jennifer Lopez’s tribute to the legendary Latina singer Celia Cruz. She always knows how to put on a show with her fantastic moves. Lady Gaga’s singing skit of “Do What U Want” with R. Kelly was more of a laughable performance where Gaga resembled Marilyn Monroe and Kelly acted as President of the United States.

Miley Cyrus, well – we aren’t surprised she sang ‘Wrecking Ball” wearing as little clothing as possible with a giant kitten lip-synching on the background screen. From country, to rap, R&B and a TLC reunion with Lil Mama – there was not a clear theme for the AMAs this time around. ABC was clearly promoting their TV shows, bringing in the Shark Tank cast, as well as random TV/Film actors and athletes to the stage as presenters – none made much sense. Normally a handful of performances stand out every year, but this award show missed the boat.

And the 2013 American Music Awards went to…

Legendary Latina singer Celia Cruz got her own tribute at this year’s American Music Awards, and Jennifer Lopez made sure it was a truly spicy one!

J. Lo proved to be quite the multi-tasker as she shook her thang while ALSO performing a medley of spanish hits!
