Serena Williams has done it again, winning her 16th Grand Slam title and now her first French Open championship. Williams beat Maria Sharapova at Roland Garros on Saturday, 6-4, 6-4. Last year she had a shocking loss in the first round of the French Open to Virginie Razzano, but won at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and the London Olympics.
During the trophy ceremony the star tennis player said, “Eleven years… I think it’s unbelievable. Now I have 16 Grand Slam titles. It’s difficult for me to speak because I’m so excited.”
According to The Associated Press, Williams is the oldest woman at age 31 to win a major title since Martina Navratilova took honors at Wimbledon in 1990 at age 33.
