Henri Matisse Comes To The LACMA

Attention art lovers. Henri Matisse: La Gerbe is LACMA’s upcoming exhibit highlighting Henri Matisse’s final commissioned artwork. In 1952, Los Angeles philanthropists Mr. and Mrs. Sidney F. Brody contacted Matisse and asked him to create an artwork for the patio of their new home designed by A. Quincy Jones. The result was a 2,000 lb.,12 x 18-foot ceramic piece titled La Gerbe (The Sheaf).

On view April 21-September 8, 2013, the exhibition marks the first time the ceramic artwork will be on display with its rare, full-scale maquette. Examples of the artist’s paper cut-out practice are exemplified in the exhibition by some of his late-career works, including the entire set of nineteen original color samples of La Gerbe, all hand-painted by the artist.
