“Motown The Musical” hits Broadway today, putting pioneer Berry Gordy’s life and career center stage. Starring Tony nominee Brandon Victor Dixon (as Gordy) and Valisia LaKae (as Diana Ross), the hit-filled production begins its previews this week at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. Officially opening on April 14th, the show features a star-studded cast of characters that breathe life into iconic figures such as Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, The Jackson Five and Stevie Wonder. The songs of these legends are weaved together to tell the story behind the founding of one of the greatest successes in music’s history: Motown Records.
Directed by Charles Randolph-Wright, “Motown” is fully endorsed by its muse. The 83-year-old Gordy is billed as not only the inspiration, but also the author of the original script, as well as the producer of the show along with Sony Music CEO Doug Morris and Tony winner Kevin McCollum.
Gordy said of the show, “I’m not really looking for glory, honors, even money or fame. That’s all passed. When I give back to people, especially those who believed in me, I feel good. And that’s way more important than the money or fame. I’m just looking to do good work. To do great work is an art.”
With the huge catalogue of favorite vintage songs flanking the extra lively dance numbers, and a great cast, it seems that Gordy has another hit on his hands.
