Rock The Weekend 1/18/13-1/20/13

FRIDAY 1/18

Of Mice And Men

Where: House of Blues

Anyone who took American high school literature thinks of John Steinbeck when they hear the words “Of Mice And Men.” Real metalcore enthusiasts, however, think of the post-hardcore band of the same name. This Friday night, West Hollywood’s House of Blues is hosting this heavy rock quartet. This should be a great show for fans of this genre. Warning: Just make sure you don’t get them confused with the very different music from mellow hipster rockers, Of Monsters and Men.

SATURDAY 1/19

MLK Jr. Holiday Festival

Where: Gibson Amphitheatre

The Gibson Amphitheatre at Universal CityWalk is going to get real funky this weekend. In honor of the national holiday celebrating Martin Luther King Jr., Hot 92.3 is putting on a festival devoted to the “big brother” of hip-hop music: funk. Saturday night they’ll be blasting out all sorts of jams from the 70’s and 80’s. Billed as a great way to have some fun while getting a little musical history, this should definitely make for an entertaining evening.

SUNDAY 1/20

Backbeat

Where: Ahmanson Theatre
Beginning this weekend, Backbeat, the story of the formative years of the legendary group The Beatles will be showing at the Ahmanson Theatre in Downtown. This show is perfect for both those that want to get a sense of the history of one of the world’s greatest groups, and for longtime devotees. Going back as far as when they were playing in Germany with Stuart Sutcliffe as a member, this play, directed by five-time Tony Award nominee, David Leveaux, is a show for all music lovers.

Lady Gaga

Where: Staples Center

This Sunday the First Lady of all things strange and controversial is coming to L.A. for back-to-back performances starting this Sunday. Consistently playing on top 40 radio stations while attending black tie affairs dressed in things like salami and tinfoil, Lady Gaga truly embodies the muddy middle ground between icon and iconoclast. However you feel about her music or her political statements, there is no denying that the woman knows how to put on an over the top performance. You won’t want to miss this.
