On March 10, 1876, Alexander Graham Bell made the first ever telephone call when he phoned up his buddy Thomas Watson and asked for a play date. A little less than 100 years later, on April 3rd 1973, Motorola engineer Marty Cooper changed the telephone world when he placed the first ever cell phone call. According to Huffington Post, the U.N. telcom agency estimates that, as of October 11, 2012, there were about 6 billion cell phone subscriptions in the world, which means that about 86 out of every 100 people own a cell phone. Marty Cooper truly changed the communications world. Cell phones allow for constant, continuous communication between businesses, families, and pretty much every human being on Earth. So, next time you get a call from your boss at midnight, when you’re out with your friends, trying to enjoy the few hours you have off between school, work, and every other pressing matter going on in your life, blame no other man than Marty Cooper. Here’s to the cell phone! Happy Birthday old friend! Let’s hope Apple comes out with the Iphone 5S before hitting your midlife crisis.
