Over the past 25 years, Academy Award nominee Carla Farmer has navigated her way from Television series to Feature films.
Saniyya Sydney revealed at the 9th Hollywood Beauty Awards that Outstanding Achievement in Hairstyling honoree Carla Farmer gave the actress her very first haircut.
Farmer worked with Saniyya when she portrayed Venus Williams in “King Richard.”
Originally from Petersburg, Virginia, Farmer grew up in Pasadena where she started doing hair. Fascinated by Hollywood, she dreamed of getting into the business and working in movies. As fate would have it, a mutual friend introduced Carla to industry veteran hairdresser Julia Walker, who became her mentor and friend.
It was not long after that when Carla got her start in a movie called HOW TO BE A PLAYER. The following year, she became personal hairstylist to Brandy Norwood in CINDERELLA.
Since 1998, Carla has been styling hair professionally in the TV & Film Industry nonstop, creating timeless looks and breaking barriers as a Department Head for such shows as GIRLFRIENDS, HALF & HALF, BARBERSHOP, RIZZOLI & ISLES, 13 REASONS WHY, and more.
Her contribution in feature films is just as impressive with GET ON UP, KINGS and AIR. The fine handiwork on these films culminated in a meeting with Eddie Murphy through former HBA honoree and friend, Stacey Morris.
That introduction led to Carla’s position as Co-Department head for DOLEMITE IS MY NAME. Then came THE UNITED STATES VS BILLIE HOLIDAY, KING RICHARD, NOPE and COMING 2 AMERICA, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award in 2022.
Shortly after, she worked on SYLVIE’S LOVE, AMERICAN GIGOLO and BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE.
Currently, she is simultaneously working on Michael Jackson’s biopic and K-POP!. Carla Farmer is not only one of the busiest hairstylists in Hollywood, but also one of the best.
