Super Bowl LVIII produced one of the most exciting games in recent memory as the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in a thrilling overtime victory to become the first back-to-back champions in 20 years. The game was settled late in the first quarter of overtime, which also was the first time the game had been played under the new overtime rules.
The Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl champions for a third time in the Patrick Mahomes era. Mahomes found Mecole Hardman for a touchdown in overtime on Sunday for the decisive score to seal the victory. The Super Bowl win is the second straight for the Chiefs and their third in five seasons. It also marks their second win over the 49ers in the Super Bowl after beating San Francisco following the 2019 season.
Mahomes was stellar yet again, completing 34 of 46 passes for 333 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He led the Chiefs on a game-tying drive at the end of regulation, then the game-winning drive in overtime. He converted two first downs with his feet in the extra session, including a run on fourth-and-1 to keep the Chiefs alive. With this win, the Chiefs can officially be called a dynasty with a third championship in five seasons. Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid further cement their status among the pantheon of all-time greats.
The effort earned Mahomes his third Super Bowl MVP trophy.
