Some not-so-funny news has just come out of Comedy Central. For 13 years Jon Stewart, has put a satirical spin on world news as the host of the channel’s The Daily Show. Since 1999, he’s been behind the desk dolling out snide remarks and impressions to make the state of the world a little more palatable. Stewart will be leaving the show, however, to make his directorial debut. But fans of his late night show don’t need to worry too much. His hiatus is only set to last for 12 weeks.
The movie he’s leaving for is called Rosewater. The script was also written by Stewart as an adaptation from Then They Came For Me: A Family’s Story of Love, Captivity and Survival, a memoir by Maziar Bahari chronicling his journey to Iran in 2009 to cover the presidential elections on behalf BBC. While there, Bahari was thrown into an Iranian prison for 118 days where he was subjected to torturous interrogations, accused of being a spy. His captors used the fact that he had previously appeared on The Daily Show as evidence that he was a spy.
Rather than leaving a gaping void in the half hour before The Colbert Report, John Oliver (who often appears as a correspondent) will take over Stewart’s post.
