Hurricane Isaac Still Strong Moving Over Gulf Coast

isaac

Isaac made landfall at 7:45 p.m. EDT Tuesday, near the mouth of the Mississippi River. The slow-moving storm is now about 50 miles southwest of New Orleans with winds traveling up to 80mph. Heavy rains are expected to bring as much as 20 inches of rain throughout parts of Louisiana.

The multi-billion dollar levee protection system in New Orleans appears to be working, according to The Army Corps of Engineers. On the other hand, over 500,000 people were left without power in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi, utility companies reported.

Thankfully Isaac has not yet reached the destructive power of Hurricane Katrina, which was Category 3 storm with maximum winds near 125 mph.

In addition to the storm, a tornado warning has also been issued in southern Mississippi.
