It's hard to imagine living in a culture where we can't talk about 'that time of the month.' Luckily for women in the U.S., menstruation is no longer a subject of taboo– schools now educate girls on the topic and sanitary pads are readily available in most locations.
Unfortunately, this is not the case in all countries. Most people in Africa see menstruation as a taboo – resulting in women unprepared for menstruation with not very easily accessible sanitary pads.
PridePads is making a difference by providing biodegradable sanitary pads, menstrual health education and livelihood empowerment for girls and women in Africa.
Cressance, one of the PridePad employees in Africa said, “I was ashamed when I started menstruation. I didn’t know what to do. I put on layers of underwear thinking it would stop it. It didn’t work so I stayed home for 3 days. Later, I have used cloth and tissues to manage menstruation.”
PridePads wants girls to realize their full potential by staying in school and no longer living with the stigmas and taboos attached to menstruation.
Stephanie Carter is the co-founder of PridePads. She's passionate about projects that have a global impact and has been working alongside co-founder Professor Wingo for the last two years to bring menstrual hygiene education and access to sanitary pads to girls and women in Cameroon.
