The Grand Canyon Celebrates 100 Years As A National Park

One hundred years ago last month, President Woodrow Wilson signed the law designating Grand Canyon a national park. That first year, the park welcomed about 38,000 visitors, the majority of whom arrived by train.

Currently, more than 6 million visitors from around the world visit the canyon every year. Every Grand Canyon experience is its own grand adventure and in 2019 as the GC celebrates its 100th birthday!

Join canyoneers from around the world in celebrating Grand Canyon National Park's centennial anniversary with special events and programs. ASU, NAU, and Grand Canyon National Park have partnered to produce "100 Years of Grand" -a centennial project to showcase archival materials around the early years of Grand Canyon.

Human cultures and the canyon have been shaping each other for over 12,000 years. American Indians cared for, shared knowledge of and admired this special place. Grand Canyon’s original stewards and their stories are still here today. Desert View Cultural Demonstrators are members of Grand Canyon's 11 traditionally associated tribes. During a cultural demonstrator program, visitors can interact and learn about these cultures and their traditional crafts.
