Flint Water Crisis Hearing: What You Need To Know

The Flint, Michigan water crisis continues to gauge the attention of Congress. On Thursday, March 17th, a Congressional committee will hold a hearing.

Water tests have shown that Flint's supply has tested positive for disease carrying bacteria and high levels of chloride, as well as lead.

According to the crisis takeaway document: Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 5 was aware of dangerously high levels of lead in Flint drinking water in April 2015, yet failed to act until January 2016 when they were forced to intervene.

On Thursday, former Flint mayor Dayne Walling, former Flint emergency manager Darnell Earley, former U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 director Susan Hedman, and Virginia Tech university professor Marc Edwards will testify.

EPA refused an October 2015 emergency petition pleading with the agency to “take all actions necessary to abate the endangerment presented by lead in Flint’s drinking water and to inform Flint residents about the potential hazards of drinking the City’s tap water.”
